You are expecting a package and have received a “USJFKA” tracking update.
What does USJFKA mean and what do you do if your tracking ends up stuck on this alert?
Let’s take a look…
Summary: What Does USJFKA Mean?
USJFKA is an international sorting facility owned by USPS in New York. It is also known as ISC NEW YORK NY (USPS). Packages traveling between the USA and overseas (and vice versa) will pass through USJFKA where they will be held for customs clearance and sorted for onward dispatch.
USJFKA (USPS) – Full Guide
We have published an in-depth article about ISC NEW YORK NY (USPS), however, today we will cover some of the points that will have made you search “USJFKA” in the first place.
Essentially, ISC NEW YORK NY (USPS) is a USPS International sorting facility based in New York.
More specifically, the sorting facility is based in the wider JFK airport complex.
The clue is essentially in the name. If you break down USJFKA into its component parts you have US (for the United States) and JFKA for JF Kennedy Airport.
Anyway, as an international sorting center owned by USPS mail items pass through the facility on their way in and out of the USA.
This means that customs clearance takes place here, along with sortation to relevant facilities inside the US (inbound mail) or to overseas destinations (outbound mail).

Tracking Stuck on USJFKA
So, the chances are you have typed in USJFKA into your search engine of choice because your package tracking has become stuck on this update.
You want to know what has happened and what to do.
First, it may come as a small consolation to understand that mail items commonly experience delays at USJFKA (or SC NEW YORK NY (USPS))
This is because of the sheer volume of packages passing through the facility every single day.
All it takes is a slight disruption in the logistical chain of events to cause a small backlog, which then causes a package to be inside the ISC for more than you would hope for.

Whether it’s simply seasonal volume, technical or staffing issues, disruptions to transport (ie air cargo) due to weather, or other problems.
If your package is inside the facility as any of these occur, you could end up seeing the USJFKA status for several days or more.
There is also the simple fact your package may be held for customs checks.
This understandably causes delays depending on the backlog there.
Furthermore, USPS has no control over your mail item while it undergoes such checks.
You will not receive any new updates until the item is either cleared and handed back to the carrier (and receives a new scan), or if customs has to contact the recipient/sender due to complications with the package.

What to do if Tracking is Stuck on USJFKA?
Due to the fact problems do occur inside USPS ICS the postal service has a dedicated contact number for customers regarding international mail.
You can call the International Inquiry Center at 800-222-1811 to make inquiries on any USPS international registered, recorded delivery, insured, mail items as well as standard parcels.
I do recommend that you wait at least 5 business days before making contact, however, (even longer on low-budget delivery services from China, etc).
It is so common for items to be held for several days, you will achieve little by waiting in line if your package has recently arrived at USJFKA and you are feeling impatient.
In cases of mail items with guaranteed delivery windows, you can of course get in touch sooner if the delivery date is approaching and the tracking is stuck.

Final Words
As with the majority of USPS international service centers delays are common. USJFKA is no different in this regard.
However, in expectation of the fact your package could be held up inside the facility for several days, you will hopefully not be so frustrated in the event the tracking does seem slow to update.
Eventually, the item will pass through the sorting center and be on its way.
If this doesn’t happen, you will have no choice but to contact USPS to speed things up.
