USPS Metro NY Distribution Center – Complete Guide

You’re expecting a parcel delivery from USPS and the tracking status reveals that it is at the “Metro NY Distribution Center”.

Where is this Distribution Center? How far away is your package? And what happens if it gets stuck there?

Let’s take a look…

The USPS “Metro NY Distribution Center” – Summary

The Metro NY Distribution Center, also known as the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC), is located in New York. It is one of the largest USPS processing facilities and is the main center for mail items from Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Manhattan, and inbound mail from John F. Kennedy Airport International Service Center

The Metro NY Distribution Center is located at United States Parcel Post Building, 341 9th Ave, New York, NY 10199. It is one of the largest USPS processing facilities in operation today.

What is the USPS Metro NY Distribution Center?

Quite simply a Network Distribution Center (NDC) is a giant mechanized sorting facility run by USPS.

It is one of 250 mail processing facilities operating in the U.S. and is responsible for the sorting and dispatch of standard mail and package services (single-piece and bulk shipments).

The Metro NY Distribution Center processes inbound mail items originating from five large boroughs within New York, (Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, and Manhattan). However, only outgoing mail to Manhattan and the Bronx is processed.

It also sorts inbound international mail from the John F. Kennedy International Service Center, (ISC New York NY USPS)

How Much Mail is Processed Through the Metro NY Distribution Center?

The United States Post Office reported that in the fiscal year 2015, the Metro NY Distribution Center processed approximately 1.96 billion mailpieces.

Although more recent data is unavailable, this figure will only have increased by 2022 (a full 7 years later), with Covid increasing mail volumes across the U.S. as more and more people turn to buy online.

Metro NY Distribution Center Tracking Updates

Metro NY Distribution Center

Those living within the catchment area of the Metro NY Distribution Center may receive mail tracking updates relevant to the center.

If you receive a status alert informing you that your inbound package or mail item is being processed through the Metro NY distribution facility, you know that delivery is close.

A USPS truck will deliver the item to a local post office located in Manhattan or the Bronx (the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center only processes outgoing mail for delivery in these two boroughs), and from there it will go out for delivery to the recipient’s address.

My Package is Stuck at the Metro NY Distribution Center

Occasionally, a mail item can end up “stuck in transit” at the Metro NY Processing and Distribution Center.

You will know this has happened when your tracking status does not change for multiple days.

There are a number of factors that can lead to this situation:

  • High mail volumes causing a backlog and delays (seasonal issues)
  • Staffing problems caused by Covid
  • Bad weather causing transit issues between the USPS distribution center and the Post Office
  • Technical problems causing a delay in the mail item being logged and sorted

Hold-ups at the distribution center are relatively common, however, the length of time is generally short.

The reasons listed above are far from insurmountable, and only in the case of a lost or damaged package will your item go missing for a duration long enough to warrant starting the claims process.

What to Do if Your Package is Stuck?

Should the package be stuck on this alert for more than 3 business days, you should make contact with USPS customer services. (Head here for contact details for an international Inquiry.)

Unfortunately, you cannot visit the Metro NY Distribution Center, (it has no customer-facing facilities) to find out what has happened or to collect your item.

If the mail item cannot be located by USPS you will have to begin the claims process. (If you are making an International claim you should head here.)

Tracking Updates to Expect After the Metro NY Distribution Center

How-Long-Does-USPS-Hold-Packages-1

After the mail item has left the Metro NY Distribution Center you can expect updates such as “In Transit to Next Facility”, “In Transit Arriving Late” (if a registered delay has occurred), and even more promising “Out for Delivery” or “Delivered to Agent for Final Delivery”.

All of these updates signify that the package is nearer to delivery.

How Long Will My Package Take to Arrive After a “Metro NY Distribution Center” Update?

calendar and clock

How long your package takes to arrive after it has been processed through the Metro NY Distribution Center depends on which direction it is going.

If the final delivery destination is Manhattan or the Bronx, the mail item is close to the end of its journey.

Assuming processing at the distribution center goes as it should, your package will arrive within 1 to 3 days.

However, if the mail item is passing through the Metro NY Distribution Center to destinations elsewhere within the USA, or even overseas via ISC New York NY (located at JFK Airport), the journey is only just beginning.

Delivery time will be dependent on where the recipient is located and the mail service speed ordered.

    • Hi there, I just checked your package via Parcelsapp and it states the following: “Delivered, To Original Sender. Your item has been delivered to the original sender at 3:19 pm on October 19, 2023 in LAKESIDE, CA 92040.” I’m afraid the item has been returned to the sender.

  2. Hi there,

have had a challenge with USPS both times with the same package containing a passport.
Paid for priority mail express both ways to new york and back to the location
on the way there took seven days and got stuck in Covington, now having left on the 13th, is saying in transit from the distribution facility. How do we get in touch with someone so that they understand the urgency of having the passport back within the said amount of time that was paid for.
    Please advise and provide help?

  3. I’m in Michigan and waiting for an item that should have been delivered on November 30th. Somehow it went from a Pontiac MI distribution center to Garden City NY distribution center to MID NY distribution center to Metro NY distribution center.

Any idea if and when this box might leave NY and will it be sent back to me or will it go back to the sender? Thank you.

    • Hi there, I just checked your package. As of today (5th December), it is stating as: PORT HURON, MI 48061, Arrived at Post Office (2:35 am on December 5, 2023 in PORT HURON, MI 48061.).. As you said you are based in Michigan I would say that the package will be delivered to you today or tomorrow.

    • Hi there, as the shipment is now in the US and is being handled by USPS, you should contact the postal service for more information. Delays at Metro NY are common though, and a package from China will take time to be processed, especially during the holidays.

It says counterfeit postage and is at the NY dist center but I use Endicia and send these labels to all my customers so I’m not sure why this happened. Anyway, I would like to get in contact with them somehow. This is a return service label to me. Any advice?

  5. HI

I have a Package that shipped to Metro Ny distribution center on January 6th then stopped tracking. It’s now January 15th. The postal website does not work. It won’t accept my request for a trace, keep getting error messages. Called and got an automated message and still no tracking. I also purchased something and my purchase is going through the same thing. either these packages are being stolen or they are just not shipping the items. The first item is a $500 bag shipped priority. They only insure for $50. Ridiculous. Furthermore there is a distribution center in Missouri that has been holding packages from November and won’t ship them. It’s so bad a Congressman has gotten involved. What is going on with these distribution centers? I live in a third world country that can’t even deliver mail.

  6. Does anyone still answer questions? I have a package that was supposed to go from NY to Texas. It was supposed to arrive January 8. It went as far as NY metro distribution and promptly stopped tracking. I tried to fill out a form on the postal site to search for it but the site doesn’t work. I keep getting error messages. Turned off cookies and the same thing. Called and got an automated system. It’s now January 16. The package hasn’t tracked in 8 days. What gives? Has a postal employee stolen it?

    • Hi there,

There does seem to be delays with items coming out of NY Metro at the moment. Have you tried your tracking number on a universal app such as 17Track or Parcelsapp? You mind find more up to date information through one of those. Otherwise it’s a case of trying USPS customer services again, until you get someone on the line.

  7. Hi Rob:
Based on the content of your article it appears my package tracking#9274890252835915132068 is the victim of a “registered delay”. How would I determine what to expect in terms of delivery. It’s been delayed since February 6. Thanks.

    • Hi Paul, are you sure you entered the tracking number correctly? It is unusually long and none of the tracking sites show it as valid. Anyway, is it an international shipment? The fact your item has been (I assume) held at Metro NY for 10 days so far is not unusual unfortunately. Mail items will often take several days, sometimes even a couple of weeks to pass through the facility… It’s hard for me to advise as I can’t check the tracking.

        • You may already know this, but USPS has acknowledged that your package is delayed. However, it is in the US and has cleared customs and is currently in transit to another facility. If your tracking isn’t updating I recommend that you contact USPS for more info.
